Now through December 8th, in celebration of the launch of the Mennett Lee Food Allergy Consulting Book List, I am partnering with some of my favorite authors to provide you with free copies of their books.  All of these books had to meet the stringent criteria for inclusion on the book list.

P&P Cover

Today, thanks to Sue Ganz-Schmitt’s generosity, we are giving away EIGHT prizes, yes EIGHT!!  We are giving away FIVE books and THREE audio books!!!  (What a great idea for those long holiday trips coming up.)

I have to say that I have such a soft spot for this book.  This book came to our family at a very challenging time. (My daughter was beginning elementary school and there was a mountain of advocacy and education that needed to be done in order to keep her safe. We had also recently faced multiple very serious reactions in addition to a number of asthma-related hospitalizations.)

As you can probably guess from the title, The Princess and the Peanut: A Royally Allergic Tale is an “allergic” take on the Princess and the Pea. This story addresses important topics such as: what it is like to have a reaction, symptoms of an allergic reaction, what to do if someone has a reaction, managing food allergies, accommodating loved ones with food allergies and much more.  However, what I love most about this book is that Sue was able to weave these important lessons into the story using the perfect dose of humor.  Managing food allergies is a serious job and can, at times, feel like a heavy burden to carry.  This book allowed our family to laugh, and to playfully talk about serious topics.  What a powerful tool!

Through humor, advocacy and education, our family began to find our footing again and began to feel that this medical condition was manageable and that everything was going to be okay. This book was part of that process for us.  That was about 5 years ago and The Princess and the Peanut still remains a family favorite.

It’s a perfect read for Pre-K through second grade (although older children will still get a kick out of it).  Every time I’ve read it to either to my own girls or to a classroom full of children, it has always generated thoughtful, positive discussions.
